Whitney Houston's I Look To You Gets The Wally Star!

Today is Whitney Houston’s birthday and my head is filled with memories of her. Her beautiful voice has been a soundtrack to my life since I was teenager. She is one of my all-time favorite people. I had the privilege of seeing her twice in concert once in Boston in 1991 and another time at Caesars Place in Atlantic City in 2000.

The evening in Atlantic City I remember feeling her amazing energy just in her presence alone. Once she started singing I was in awe. I was sitting close to the stage and felt lucky that all those notes coming out of her mouth were falling all over me. It was such a privilege seeing her in such an intimate setting. I felt like I was pulled by her force to walk right up to the stage, and I did. She was absolutely beautiful in person with beautiful skin and eyes that let you see her soul. And of course that signature smile. The show was incredible. She closed with the song “I Will always Love You” as I rested my arms on the stage and gazed up at her. What I remember most was that she knelt down towards the floor when she bowed. I was so close to her I could see and hear her whisper a prayer of gratitude. It felt so sincere. When she stood back up she smiled at me and then waved good bye to her audience. I remember walking away thinking of how wonderful she sounded but more importantly that she had a special relationship with God. You could see the Divine sparkling all over her.

Years later, when all the personal and media trouble started to peak I was quite worried about her. It was official, “Houston, we have a problem.” All I could do during those hard years was pray for her and appreciate the incredible body of work she has produced, and videos of her amazing live performances - like at Arista’s 25th Anniversary party. I still use that medley to get me going when ever I need good energy and inspiration.

In 2009, after years of silence, the album “I Look To You” was released. On the cover, Whitney is dressed in white looking spectacular. The album is wonderful and I feel like she is really talking to me. The album feels like a love letter. A love letter to the ones she has loved most of all. It reminds me of the people in my life that I have loved and lost. In 2012 when Whitney died, I realized that this album was really a good-bye letter.  Of all Whitney’s albums, I love this one the most. I miss you Whitney - Happy Birthday, you get the Wally Star!
